Wonderfully staged and you may wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero high challenge when you look at the lifestyle off the incredibly unsightly identity.” [ 8 ]

The new film’s writer and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a great multidimensional chess games, having mortal limits, between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and an excellent scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) has worked on gambling enterprise and you may dated good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures away from love and risk, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may smartly assertive photo (plus their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet intricate spectacle a low profile vintage of one’s genre.” [ ten ]

Its primarily a matter of enjoying Mr. Powell read his paces smartly if you are a massive cast from stars and you may actresses provide your typical assistance. Evelyn Keyes performs the great little lady just who brings forth this new finest in him and you will Ellen Received is the sleek and you will slinky vixen just who becomes your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily since villain and you can Lee J. Cobb really does a different able trip just like the a weary cops inspector whom eventually shuts happening. Many consuming and puffing is done by all of the concerned.” [ several ]
